Job Description
The Staff Mechanical Engineer will conceptualize, develop, analyze and verify new mechanical design concepts for next generation surgical robot systems. You will apply your product development and analysis expertise to next generation da Vinci designs leveraging your creativity and engineering analysis to the design of kinematics, robotic actuation and sensing solutions. This requires in-depth collaboration with cross-functional teams that will routinely leverage your technical and interpersonal skills as you develop a shared understanding of the new product requirements.

Key Roles & Responsibilities

  • Subject matter expert in leading and executing complex FEA and model analysis, experimental characterization, and design optimization, including CFD and thermal modeling.
  • Lead multi-disciplinary technical teams to analyze existing designs and define requirements for new and current designs, including thermal management.
  • Mentor and guide other colleagues in characterization and analysis.
  • Create detailed mechanical assemblies and prototypes, with careful consideration of key functions, precision design principles, cost, manufacturability and safety.
  • Design test methodologies and fixtures to develop deeper understanding of key technical challenges, verify and refine designs.
  • Design components and producing mechanical drawings in a government regulated environment for volume manufacturing processes which may include cast metal, injection molded plastic, sheet metal stamped, and others.
  • Contribute to budget, resource, and planning of technical projects and workstreams.
Qualifications

Required

  • BSME, or similar.
  • Minimum 12 years of related experience, or 8 years with a MSME, or 5 years with a PhD.
  • Solidworks CAD design, drawing, GD&T and ANSYS proficiency.
  • Analytical foundation in mechanical engineering first principles.
  • Curiosity in driving to first principles and root cause understanding.
  • Exercises independent judgment in methods, techniques and evaluation criteria to analyze complex systems.
  • Experience leading cross-functional projects and teams, including collaborations with consultants and external project teams.
  • Experience designing precision robotic joints, including integrating gears, actuators, encoders and brakes with attention to size, weight, torque, dynamics, precision, cost, and manufacturability.
  • Self-driven to achieve individual and collaborative results in a high-energy, small, focused team environment, to maintain a strong sense of shared responsibility and shared reward, and to foster a positive and encouraging group culture.
  • Flexible to changing priorities and able to balance and prioritize multiple and competing demands based on organizational goals and needs.
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and able to build clarity and consensus among cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Understanding of engineering materials, component selection criteria, and design for reliability and manufacturability.
  • Effectively takes the lead in communicating with and influencing peers and senior stakeholders. Communicates effectively across varying organizational levels.
  • Effectively makes decisions and achieves project goals involving cross-functional teams.

  • Graduate study or equivalent research experience.
  • Medical product development process and product launch experience.

We provide market-competitive compensation packages, inclusive of base pay, incentives, benefits, and equity. It would not be typical for someone to be hired at the top end of range for the role, as actual pay will be determined based on several factors, including experience, skills, and qualifications. The target salary ranges are listed.

Base Salary Range Region 1: $180,400 USD - $259,600 USD
Base Salary Range Region 2: $153,300 USD - $220,700 USD
