Controller (Construction)
This role is ideal for a proven financial leader who has successfully compressed multi-entity closes from 10+ days down to =5 business days, with demonstrated excellence in external audit management and a track record of leading audits without restatements. The ideal candidate combines hands-on expertise in percentage-of-completion accounting and units-delivered revenue recognition with proven ability to lead organizational change and implement scalable processes in high-growth environments.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Accounting Operations Leadership
Lead full-GAAP, multi-entity month-end close in =5 business days, personally ensuring accuracy and resolution across all entitiesManage intercompany eliminations, covenant reporting, and multi-state sales & use tax complianceLead percentage-of-completion (PoC) accounting and units-delivered revenue recognition for construction contractsOversee all accounting functions including AP, AR, treasury, GL reconciliations, and financial reportingDesign and implement comprehensive risk-control matrices and delegation-of-authority policies
Proactive Problem Solving and Root Cause Analysis
Actively investigate issues as they arise, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.Develop proactive measures to improve efficiency, accuracy, and controls across all financial processes.
Inventory and Cost Controls
Lead standard-cost manufacturing flows, including overhead absorption, variance analysis, and cost true-up processesEstablish and enforce controls over inventory accounts, ensuring reconciliation with subledgersMap, redesign, and optimize quote-to-cash, procure-to-pay, and inventory workflows to support company growthCollaborate with operations to maintain accurate BOMs, standard costs, and address production variances
Customer-Centric Focus
Foster a culture of responsiveness and customer-first thinking, ensuring vendors, customers, and colleagues consistently receive high-quality information on time, reinforcing Lockes reputation as a trusted industry partner.
Hands-On Analysis and Reporting
Personally deliver deep-dive financial analysis and reporting, including weekly updates on delivered sales, accrued revenue, estimated costs, production, and other relevant KPIs.Prepare a 13-week rolling cash forecast and directly contribute to treasury management decisions.Create daily and weekly scorecards, synthesizing data into actionable insights for operational leaders.
Systems Optimization and Integration
Become highly proficient in our Titan 3000 ERP system, leading optimization efforts and coordinating with software developers to fine-tune our existing AP+ AI automation system for maximum efficiencyPartner with the FP&A Analyst and Supply Chain Manager to develop scalable reporting and analysis tools.Plan and execute M&A integrations, establishing remote operating controls and scalable financial processes that support long-term growth.Leverage AI-driven tools to optimize workflows, improve forecasting, and enhance decision-making.
Audit, Compliance, and Risk Management
Coordinate external audits, tax filings, and insurance renewals, ensuring timely and accurate submissions.Evaluate credit insurance options and maintain oversight of credit risk processes, including lien notices and customer credit evaluations.Maintain accurate fixed asset registers and ensure compliance with company policies.
Team Leadership and Development
Lead and manage a team of accounting professionals by example, demonstrating a hands-on approach to solving problems and delivering results.Foster a high-performance culture built on accountability, respect, and teamwork.Develop and implement clear roles, responsibilities, and training plans for team members.Provide mentorship and set expectations through weekly debriefs, ensuring continuous improvement and alignment.
Strategic Partnership and Communication
Act as a trusted advisor to the Director of Finance, Human Resources and Administration (CFO) and leadership team, providing clear, concise updates on accounting issues and priorities.Build strong cross-functional relationships with sales, operations, and project management teams to drive enterprise-wide success.Advocate for financial discipline and strategic decision-making across all departments, ensuring financial alignment with operational goals.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA and/or MBA strongly preferred.10+ years in accounting or financial management roles, including at least 5 years in leadership positions.Proficiency in ERP systems and advanced Excel skills.Expertise in financial reporting, reconciliations, and inventory/cost accounting.Familiarity with progress billing and accrual-based processes in manufacturing or construction environments.Experience leveraging AI and data-driven technologies to optimize workflows and enhance efficiency.Highly organized with exceptional problem-solving skills and a proactive mindset.Hands-On Leadership: Demonstrated ability to balance strategic oversight with detailed execution.Strong communication skills, able to distill complex issues for diverse audiences.Business Acumen: Strong financial and operational insight to make data-driven decisions that balance cost, quality, and customer satisfaction.Strong technical aptitude with ability to quickly learn and optimize complex ERP systems (Titan 3000) and coordinate with software developers on AI-driven process improvements
