Position Overview:

Our paid internship program provides a rich and rewarding hands-on learning experience and the opportunity to make a contribution to our organization. Our interns work in their course of study under close direction of an experienced supervisor/manager to learn about various roles within the building materials industry.

Dates: Summer 2026

Location: Salem, OR and surrounding area.

Potential Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions):

Construction:

  • Support coordination efforts with regulatory agencies and traffic control subcontractors
  • Assist in preparing and mobilizing job sites for construction activities
  • Collaborate with subcontractors and superintendents to ensure seamless project execution
  • Contribute to the preparation and documentation of change orders
  • Monitor and track daily quantities for subcontractor and prime contract work
  • Provide ongoing support for project supervision and oversight
  • Participate in construction meetings with owners, utility providers, and subcontractors
  • Attend and contribute to internal production meetings
  • Assist in performing grade verification and site measurements
  • Support quantity measurement for job progress and final billing
  • Learn and utilize estimating and bid tracking software
  • Develop proficiency in reading and interpreting specifications and construction plans
  • Analyze project data, including production rates and cost metrics, to support bid preparation
  • Conduct various tests on aggregates, asphalt mixes, and ready-mix concrete (e.g., gradation, moisture, oil content, density, strength)
  • Assist with material sampling in both plant and field environments
  • Support layout, fabrication, and assembly tasks as needed

Quality Control:

  • Learn and apply quality control methodologies and reporting standards
  • Gain familiarity with paving processes and density control techniques
  • Understand mix specification requirements across various applications
  • Develop knowledge of aggregate processing and quality assurance protocols
  • Assist in safely and efficiently testing construction materials
  • Communicate test results and mix specifications with fellow technicians
  • Report findings ethically and in accordance with the company's Ethics Policy
  • Follow assigned quality control plans and procedures

Environmental:
  • Acquire foundational knowledge of environmental regulations relevant to construction and materials industries
  • Understand permitting processes and compliance requirements
  • Assist in conducting inspections, audits, and compliance reviews to ensure regulatory adherence
  • Conduct interviews with site personnel to gather necessary compliance data
  • Compile and organize data into spreadsheets for annual reporting
  • Participate in site reviews of environmental plans and documentation
  • Support special environmental projects as assigned
  • Contribute to the development of sustainable work practices and innovative solutions
  • Help identify areas of concern and assist in data analysis

GIS:

  • Assist in implementing systems and databases for geospatial data management
  • Produce maps, data layers, tables, and other visualizations related to parcels, land use, and leases
  • Support efforts to standardize and validate geographic data
  • Review GIS datasets for accuracy and completeness
  • Conduct research to determine property ownership and update maps accordingly
  • Interpret base maps and maintain parcel/land use databases; verify and assign boundaries

Sustainability:

  • Learn and assist in developing and maintaining Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for company products
  • Support ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) initiatives and product innovation across operating companies
  • Contribute to cross-functional projects in departments such as Quality Control, Sustainability, Environmental Compliance, and Government Relations
  • Assist in analyzing sustainability-related data and reporting insights

Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Applicants must be entering currently enrolled in a Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Material Science, Construction Management, or closely related program of study.
  • Must be available to work approximately 30-40 hours per week
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instruction
  • Detail oriented
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize workloads in a fast-paced environment.
  • A valid driver's license, current authorization to work in the United States, and pass pre-employment controlled-substance testing.

Work Requirements:

  • This position has been identified by the employer as safety sensitive and will be subject to an employer-required pre-employment drug screening that includes testing for nonpsychoactive cannabis metabolites.
  • Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated operations and production areas as stated by OSHA and/or MSHA.
  • Regular and timely attendance.

  • May include limited travel within the Pacific Northwest.
